MY TEACHERS

Kai Ying Tung (董继英) Tung Kai Ying is a master of Yang Style Taijiquan and of his family’s own unique brand of Taijiquan. Master Tung teaches mainly in Los Angeles. When it comes to teaching Taijiquan, Master Tung is a traditionalist. His classes are well organized and his students are very serious. The Yang Style form he teaches is not the kind that you see often depicted in the movies and TV, i.e., floating and flighty. His form is seriously slow, intense and deliberate. His students develop internal strength and deep root.

The class starts with everyone doing the Yang Traditional form of Yang ChengFu of 105 postures. The form lasts for 50 minutes to hour. Afterwards, push-hands for half-an-hour. Then Fast set: a kind of Yang style cannon fist. All 105 postures, fast and with issuing of power (fa jin fa li)

George Xu

Master George can be brash, abrupt, friendly, frightening, gentle, and iconoclastic, but always in a word GREAT.  He is the consummate student, always seeking to improve his skills and always analyzing and questioning everything. He brings a fresh and novel approache to understanding martial arts. Master George teaches Chen Style, LanShou (long fist), Xin Yi Quan, and other arts. The one thing about Master George, he does not B.S. you. He tells you what he thinks. "Your Taiji better work or its BS." Some people love his teaching style some people don’t, but Master George is truly a unique individual and worth meeting. He has a great sense of humor also.

Worldwide Association of Chinese Internal Martial Arts

This is the organization that Master George founded. It seeks to promote Chinese Martial arts to a broader group of people and to expose teachers from China to the West.

Qian ZhaoHong (钱兆鸿)Master Qian ZhaoHong, is a high level internal martial artist from Shanghai and noted fighter and push hands practitioner. Master Qian is said to be one of the top fighters in all of China. He has trained in Xinyi LiuHe Quan, Wudang Taiji, Chan Si (Spiral) Taiji and a number of other martial arts, starting when he was a child in a Shanghai neighborhood called Wushu Village because so many martial arts masters lived and taught there. Most martial arts focus on becoming stronger and stronger. His emphasis is on becoming empty to achieve complete freedom to respond.

Zhang ShengYi Master Zhang is Chen style Master I met in Beijing in the Spring of 2006. His style of teaching is personal and direct. He takes the time to make sure the students understand the exercises and postures. Master Zhang taught me an excellent series of Ji-Ben Gong exercises, what we in the States call silk-reeling exercises. It is though the practice of Ji-Ben Gong (foundational training) that we develop silk-reeling power (chan si jing 缠丝劲). Master Zhang’s Chen style is the best I have ever seen. He really combines softness with power.

PORTLAND AREA TEACHERS

Mark Hodges Mark teaches Yang Style. Mark has been studying and practicing Taijiquan with me since 2001 and has shown a sincere interest in the health aspects as well as the art and culture of Taiji. Mark teaches a large class for Portland Parks & Recreation and a class on Wednesday evenings.  His students appreciate the personal, sensitive, and intelligent approach to tai chi chuan and teaching.

James LeFever James teaches Yang Style Wednesday evenings and is the lead organizer of the Chen Style Study Group. James not only loves to train but is a scholar of the martial arts and Asian philosophy. Jimmy started studying with me in 2001. He has learned Yang Style and Chen Style. In addition, James has studied Okinawan Karate, and Aikido. He is a caring instructor who wishes to transmit the original essence of the art he teaches. He is a student of the I Qing (Yi Jing) as well as other writings. His favorite translator is Thomas Cleary.

Carlos Hanson Carlos teaches Chen style at the YMCA in Sherwood, Oregon. Carlos is a very experienced martial artist. Carlos, however, still maintains an infectious enthusiasm and “beginners mind” when it comes to learning Chinese martial arts and to Chen Style Taijiquan. Carlos is an excellent and patient teacher. Carlos’ goal is to share his knowledge and love of Taijiquan and martial arts with more people.

Harry Affley Harry is my elder Gong-Fu brother (Shi-Xiong). He is a very talented internal martial artist, and has great insight into the internal mechanisms of the body and how to turn that knowledge into useable free power. He has taught Taijiquan (Tai chi Chuan) for over 20 years or more. He has taught me a great deal and we have studied under Qian ZhaoHong and George Xu together.
